At Casar de Burbia, we don’t just comply with organic farming standards; we go beyond. We research, experiment, and innovate to restore vitality to our soils.

The Bierzo region is one of contrasts—steep vineyard slopes, slate, quartz, and iron-rich soils that give character to every grape. But it’s also a region facing constant change, with climate change challenging us every day.

To adapt, we have embraced precision organic regenerative viticulture, aiming not just to preserve but to revitalize our soils, making them more fertile, resilient, and full of life.

Research, Regeneration, and Passion for Living Soils

Every vineyard plot is unique. At Casar de Burbia, we manage 52 individual parcels, studying their specific needs and applying tailor-made solutions. In many, we have completely stopped plowing the soil, allowing nature to restore its own balance.

• More organic matter, more life: By avoiding soil disturbance, we increase organic matter levels, enhancing microbiological activity and water retention, helping us combat drought in the hottest months.

• Natural mulching: In certain parcels, we apply a cover crop of pruning remains and dry grass, which not only protects the soil from erosion but also lowers surface temperatures by up to 10ºC in summer, creating a more stable environment for the vines.

• Breathing and water-retaining soils: These techniques have reversed the degradation process that many believed was inevitable. Today, our vineyards have healthier, more resilient soils that retain water and sustain life naturally.

This is a journey of years, of observation, patience, and continuous learning.
